Schemas and Crosswalks A metadata format is a series of rules and elements defined in order to ensure a common semantic understanding of a resource. A metadata format can be (and arguably should be) expressed in various forms, e.g.:
The OAI protocol relies on the ability to explicitly validate metadata through the application of XML schemas. All data providers must refer to the appropriate schema(s) for their metadata. The CIC portal encourages content providers to share complete metadata records in the richest metadata formats available. CIC OAI metadata providers should also adhere to accepted best practices for the use of the OAI protocol. The following technical references can be used to share various metadata formats.
