CIC Qualified Dublin Core Format

The CIC qualified Dublin Core format lists the DC Terms accepted and sets recommendations for the encoding scheme. It is important to note that any encoding scheme is accepted as long as it has an associated namespace. The encoding schemes belonging to the DCT namespace are recommended. However, if your institution uses another encoding scheme for your metadata, you should mention it in the xsi:type. If no namespace is available for it, please contact us so that we can set one for you.

The qualified Dublin Core supports broader and narrower terms. When narrower terms are not applicable, the broader term can be used. Only two levels exist, the top-level elements and their qualifiers. The top-level elements are underlined and highlighted.

When processing the data, the CIC identifies and uses Qualified DC concepts. The Qualified DC format is not mandatory. The CIC project recommends data providers to share the richest metadata format which is available. If there is no richer metadata format such as MARC, MODS or EAD or if this is not relevant to your specific case, it is recommended to expose your metadata in Qualified DC.

In all cases, the simple Dublin Core format is mandatory in the OAI protocol.

More information on the Qualified Dublin Core can be found on the Dublin Core Website
