CIC Collection Description Format

The CIC collection description format is based on the proposal of the Dublin Core Collection working group for a Collection application profile as of August 20th 2004.

The collection description format is intended to provide a way for data providers to describe the collections they expose. From those description, it will be possible to extract contextual information to display for end-user when they browse records on the CIC metadata portal:

For the purpose of the CIC project, the most important elements of this metadata set are represented in blue color.

Identifier dc: identifier Collection Identifier if the collection corresponds to an OAI set, the setspec should be equivalent to the collection identifier
Title dc: title The name of the collection. Should be meaningful outside the context of the collection.

Alternative Title dct: alternative Any form of the name used as a substitute or alternative to the formal name of the collection  
Description dct: abstract A summary of the content of the collection.  
Physical Characteristics dc: format The physical or digital characteristics of the collection. If part of the collection is being digitized, please provide the physical characteristics of both the physical an the digital formats
Size dct: extent The size of the collection. If part of the collection is being digitized, please provide the size of the full collection
Language dc: language A language of the content of the items in the collection.  
Type dc: type The type of the collection. Values should be ciccolltype:CollectionDataset

Rights dc: rights A statement of any rights held in/over the collection.  
Access Rights dct: accessRights A statement of any access restrictions placed on the collection, including allowed users, charges, etc.  
Accrual Method ciccoll: accrualMethod The method by which items are added to a collection.  
Accrual Periodicity ciccoll: accrualPeriodicity The frequency with which items are added to a collection.  
Accrual Policy ciccoll: accrualPolicy The policy governing the addition of items to a collection. Collection development policy
Custodial History ciccoll: provenance A statement of any changes in ownership and custody of the collection that are significant for its authenticity, integrity and interpretation.  
Audience dct: audience A class of entity for whom the collection is intended or useful.  
Logo ciccoll: logo An image or logo associated with the collection. This should refer to the same image as the branding schema for OAI sets or provide an example thumbnail illustrating the collection content
Subject dc: subject A subject or topic associated with the items in the collection.  
Spatial Coverage dct: spatial The spatial coverage of the content of the items in the collection  
Temporal Coverage dct: temporal The temporal coverage of the content of the items in the collection.  
Accumulation Date Range dct: created The range of dates over which the collection was accumulated.  
Contents Date Range ciccoll: contentsDateRange The range of dates over which the individual items within the collection were created.  
Collector dc: creator Collector  
Owner marcrel: own An entity who has legal possession of the collection.  
Is Located At ciccoll: isLocatedAt The location of the collection. Institution that hosts the collection (if digital, the institution that hosts the server)
Is Available Via ciccoll: isAvailableVia A service that provides access to the collection. The collection home page
Also the OAI repository identifier and setspec if any
Please provide a URL when available and an xsi:type "dct:URI"
Sub-collection dct: hasPart A second collection contained within the current collection.  
Super-collection dct: isPartOf A second collection that contains the current collection.  
Catalogue or description dc: description A second collection that describes the current collection (for example, the catalogue for the current collection).  
Associated collection dc: relation A second collection that is associated with the current collection.  
Associated publication dct: isReferencedBy A publication that is based on the use, study, or analysis of the collection.
